Some looking around with a flashlight,
and in the pond, UNDERWATER among last autumn's sunken leaves ...
How did it get from HERE to THERE ?
Did the recorded file survive the dunking, and maybe provide a clue?
I removed five teeny screws and snapped the recorder apart, dried it off, plugged in its USB connector...
Survival of the file !
And something LOUD at the very end, before the abrupt cutoff ...
Here's the evidence ...
This is just the last two minutes of the file. You can hear the peepers go quiet when the critter appears, then some
faint slurping (drinking from the pond?) then ... attack !

Some serious munching happened... the battery cover was cracked almost in half (and REMOVED), and the right
microphone was completely ripped out with its wire dangling...
And teeth marks! This might be the best clue... tiny pointed teeth... a raccoon ?
Living to see another day! ... as a MONO recorder, with only one "ear". Still works! But I can't change
any settings because it has a blank face - can't see the menu!
I highly recommend this little workhorse... I've already ordered a replacement. Olympus WS-400S - about $60-$80 at Best Buy,
office stores, and amazon.com. Intelligent compression and low noise, with an extremely handy built-in USB connector for drag-and-drop
offloading. But no nutrition information label.
